The author needs to go back to the wikipedia, and read up on "sample bias"
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sample_bias), and than review a few
court cases that
show who his "hackers" are.
I find it exceedingly hard to believe that the unwashed, mumbling,
anti-social loaners
are responsible for the reported 3 billion dollar in phishing losses.
Crime is a social
activity and, unlike vandalism, requires basic social skills. Instead
of focusing on the
anti-social, mumbling and underwashed operators, I would focus on the
smooth talking
and Boss-wearing mastermind. The geeks don't care, they were just not
able to find
other work place with no dress code and 3pm-5am hours.
Finally, "magical thinking" and "bodily illusions" make people smear
lemon juice in order
to avoid being recorded on cctv (search for McArthur Wheeler). That's
a nuisance rather
than a threat.
