My 2 pfennigs:
A 16oz steak costs more than an 8oz. If I want two cars I'll have to spend twice as much. Ergo, if someone wants to have two seats on an airline odds are good that the reasonable approach is to ask them to buy two tickets.
The fixed cost of flying chairs through the air does not change based on what is occupying them. Any other approach could see a company forced to operate at a loss - say, when the BeefEaters' Club all fly on the same plane and the airline can only sell half as many seats as usual - and that just doesn't seem logical.
OnTopic: I have hesitated to volunteer because my time is not good, but for lack of enough people you can tack me onto the end and I'll do what I can.
