In other words, the rules of the English language are more descriptive than
prescriptive. This fluidity, plus the use of complex auxiliaries rather than
verb endings, and the immense number of cognates, is what gives my native
tongue its flexibility and vast range of nuance and alternate/alternative
vocabulary
Can't speak for you yanks though. You can't spell colour right
