I think we can all agree that child abuse is bad - and in some cases as bad as or worse than murder - but there is a reason why "think of the children" has become a cultural joke. There are simply too many people willing to call anything "child abuse" so they can ban it, and the campaign against child abuse has all too often turned into a witch hunt.
At one extreme, a woman named Wendy Murphy is on record as stating that allowing a child to publicly criticize Bill O'Reilly (a "conservative" talking head in the U.S.) is "the worst kind of child abuse". This might be easily dismissed as the ravings of a lunatic, were it not for the fact that Wendy Murphy was formerly a prosecutor who specialized in prosecuting crimes against children.
